So why Alchemy? Well, because HR, Training and Organisational Development work, when it’s done well, is genuinely transformative. I love helping clients to put in place working practices, strategies, policies and development opportunities that enable people to fulfil their potential and help their organisations make the greatest possible difference.
I spent my early career in HR management and Organisational Development, firstly at the Bank of England and then at First Direct (HSBC Group), where I became a Senior Manager. I am a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Chartered MCIPD) and have been a freelance consultant, facilitator and trainer since 2013.
I work primarily with cultural and third sector clients on all aspects of people and organisational management, and have a strong network of associates to call on, ready to help with any projects – whatever the size or scope. My varied experience in the private, public and third sectors, with organisations ranging from multi-nationals to local volunteer–led charities, means I take a realistic and flexible approach to supporting the clients I work with. One of my favourite parts of the job is spending time with people – getting to know them and their organisations – so that we can work together to achieve the best possible outcomes, whatever the limitations of time or resources.
Throughout my career, I’ve also seen the world of work from all angles – as an employee, leader, volunteer and trustee. As a result, I enjoy working both operationally and strategically, and am an enthusiastic advocate of involving people from different parts of organisations in all my work. I’ve found that this approach helps to make sure that projects and plans really do deliver, not least because it means they are not my plans, but the plans of all those who care about the organisation and are responsible for turning them into reality. It is always my intention to help build the capability and expertise of the people and organisations I work with, so that next time they’ll be confident to take on the work without my help.
When I’m not doing all this, I enjoy singing in York's Chapter House Choir and spending time with my family. If you were ever to meet me on a non-working day, it would probably be in a bookshop or on top of a mountain!
